Friends of the Cheat would like to send out a special Thank-you to all students that participated in our 2011 Drawing Contest. We were overwhelmed with 102 creative entries and having to choose just one from each of the 4 grade categories. As all grades were not represented, and we had a large percentage of drawings from 5th & 6th grade students, we added an additional winner from those grades. We chose one winner from the following grade levels: 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7-8th Grade.

Japanese Knotweed Eradication

Japanese knotweed spreads quickly to form dense thickets that prevents the growth of native vegetation and greatly alters natural ecosystems. Friends of the Cheat can use more volunteers to help continue our effort of eradicating knotweed in the watershed. If interested in helping this summersend an email to foc@cheat.org

Here is my perspective of the festival as keeper of the gate to the stage. Highlights include a rainbow over the stage that appeared during a brief downpour, dancers and hula hoops, musicians, and the charisma of the crowd.

FOC Celebrates Earth Day 09 & Adopt-A-Highway Clean-ups

To celebrate Earth Day 2009 Friends of the Cheat had about 10 volunteers come out on Saturday April 18th to take part in their Adopt a Highway clean-up. 28 bags of garbage was collected on the strip of Highway that starts in Albright & goes north on Rt 26 for about 3 miles. The second event that fell in line with Earth day was a native tree planting event on Briery Mountain Wildlife Management Area on April 21st,22nd, & 24th. This project was a cooperative effort between Friends of the Cheat, Camp Dawson, and the Mountaineer Treeways Program.

Morgantown Toxic Tour 2008

Tour arranged by WVU Student Sierra Club included viewings of invasive plant species on the rail-trail, the Beechurst power plant, the Longview power plant, the Richard mine drainage on Deckers Creek, Paul Brown's solar house, and a vegetable oil powered bus!

Photos from the Acid Mine Drainage Tour showing the various AMD treatment projects in Preston County. Sites visited included the Woolen Mill Road Interpretive Trail Site (Muddy Creek), T&T #2, Rockville (Permit#5-65-78), the Titchnell Property and Sovern Run #62 . An awesome tour! Highly recommended.

National Bicycle Greenway - 2005

On May 20th I rode in the Morgantown to Pittsburgh leg of the NBG as part of the National Mayors Ride, and I hope to ride a Kingwood to Morgantown leg in next years ride. There is a strong possibility of this happening with the partnership of PRTC, FOC, Preston County Commission, the City of Kingwood and the National Park Service's Rivers & Trails Program. NBG is an initiative to create a national network of interconnected bike roads and pathways that are safe for all cyclists to ride. Next year, I want to shake the hands of Kingwood's Mayor along with the Mayor of Morgantown and Pittsburgh!

Every year prior to the Cheat River Festival, Friends of the Cheat has a drawing contest that is open to all students K-12. The drawings are to represent the mission statement of FOC to "Restore, Preserve, and Promote the outstanding natural qualities of the Cheat River watershed. This year we recieved about 36 drawings, of which 4 were chosen as the winners.

On August 19 we invited the public to join us as we toured the River of Promise interpretive trail and several projects to treat Acid Mine Draiange. T & T mine is the site of active treatment with chemicals. The Aquafix doser is used at Rockville Mining.
