Friends of the Cheat would like to send out a special Thank-you to all students that participated in our 2012 drawing contest. A record breaking 147 drawings were entered in this year's contest. As all grades were not represented,and we had an abundance of entries from both the 3rd-4th and the 5th-6th grade levels, we added an additional winner in both these contest grade categories. The winners all recieved two passes to the 18th Annual Cheat River festival on May 5th , 2012 and a watershed token made by Gail Anderson of Clay Art by Gail

To celebrate Earth Day 2009 Friends of the Cheat had about 10 volunteers come out on Saturday April 18th to take part in their Adopt a Highway clean-up. 28 bags of garbage was collected on the strip of Highway that starts in Albright & goes north on Rt 26 for about 3 miles. The second event that fell in line with Earth day was a native tree planting event on Briery Mountain Wildlife Management Area on April 21st,22nd, & 24th. This project was a cooperative effort between Friends of the Cheat, Camp Dawson, and the Mountaineer Treeways Program.

Tour arranged by WVU Student Sierra Club included viewings of invasive plant species on the rail-trail, the Beechurst power plant, the Longview power plant, the Richard mine drainage on Deckers Creek, Paul Brown's solar house, and a vegetable oil powered bus!

The Jenkinsburg project is a partnership between a private landowner, two river-oriented non-profits, two state environmental agencies, a number of canoe and kayak clubs, and hundreds of donors from West Virginia and the surrounding states.
